Why Choose a Positive Trainer?
Why choose a trainer that uses positive reinforcement, rewards (including treats) and avoids the use of force in training?
(Dr Ian Dunbar, top dog training and behaviour expert)
Positive reinforcement is the method of choice by ALL the recognised experts in the field of dog training and behaviour. It is the most scientifically sound and proven method to train any animal and get the most reliable and effective results.
Positive methods can be effectively used with ANY breed of dog with ANY problem.
Trainers that tell you otherwise simply dont know how to use the methods properly and do not understand how dogs learn best or their behaviour. Old fashioned trainers (including high profile TV celebrity Cesar Millan) that continue to use force, pain, fear, intimidation and dominance to 'train' or 'rehabilitate' dogs have not educated themselves in the most up to date information that we know about our dogs and do not understand or care about the effects of using punitive techniques on dogs. Training techniques using such tools as choke, prong and shock collars and based on force, fear, pain and intimidation are outdated and potentially harmful, and alpha/dominance theory is based in mythology and has no place in the world of dog training. Training should be teaching, and there is no place for force in teaching.
I would encourage you to follow this link to Leah Roberts' website Dog Willing for articles and for videos. Leah has a wonderfully comprehensive list of articles/videos to help you understand your dog and training methods better. The better educated you are the more sound a decision you can make regarding training your dog.
For a good TV dog training show, watch Victoria Stillwell's show "Its Me Or The Dog".
Ask yourself this simple question...do you really want to hurt your dog? If you can effectively use positive methods, why would you choose to use force, fear and pain on your dog?
"I believe it's long past time that we totally lose all the dominance-based, alpha-obsessed baggage that has infiltrated dog training and acknowledge that successful animal training can be rooted in cooperative partnerships, shared joy and genuine love." Kathy Sdao in her book Plenty in Life is Free: Reflections on Dogs, Training and Finding Grace.
